**The short answer**

Halloween is **Saturday, October 31**. If you want custom Halloween embroidery on a shirt, hoodie, bag or costume, **order your design now**. Free files are fine for testing a machine. A custom file is what makes a Halloween product look like yours and not like the ghost 50 other shops posted.

Whether you run an Etsy shop, decorate staff hoodies, stitch costumes for your kids, or just got a new machine, this guide covers three things: **free Halloween designs worth using**, **custom designs and vector art**, and **how to stitch spooky designs without ruining the garment**.

Written by the Sassy Digitizing team. Quality checked by Keith Blair. We have digitized for 2,078+ clients across the USA, from home studios to well-known brands.

## Your Halloween Countdown: Work Backward From October 31

Most people count forward from "I have an idea." Count backward from the day the garment must be in the customer's hands.

| Step | Target date | Why it matters |
| ------------------------- | -------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Order the design file** | This week | Everything else waits on this. Ask for rush if you are tight. |
| **Test stitch on scrap** | Within a day of getting the file | Catches thread, tension and fabric problems before the real garment. |
| **Production run** | Around Oct 24 to 26 | Leaves room for a redo if something goes wrong. |
| **Ship or hand over** | By Oct 28 for shipped orders | Carriers get slow in the last week of October. |

These dates are a planning guide for shop owners, not a promise from any carrier.

**What US searchers want right now**

We reviewed the last 30 days of US embroidery search data. Four things stood out.

- **"Custom embroidery"** is a breakout search. People want _their_ idea stitched, not a stock file.
- **"Free Halloween embroidery designs"** is breaking out too. Buyers want to test before they pay.
- **"Halloween embroidery design"** is up **60%**. **"Embroidery patterns"** is up **20%**.
- **"Brother embroidery machine"** and **"embroidery blanks"** are also breakout terms, which points to a wave of new machine owners stocking up.

Free and custom are climbing _together_. The pattern is simple: someone grabs a free file, stitches it, loves it, then asks, _"Can I get one with my kid's name on it?"_ So let's cover both.

## Free Halloween Embroidery Designs: 3 Checks Before You Download

Free files are great. Some are also bad: blown-out density, jump stitches everywhere, a pumpkin that puckers the whole shirt. Check these three things first.

1. **The format matches your machine.** Brother and Baby Lock read PES. Janome reads JEF. Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff read VP3\. Most commercial machines read DST. If you are unsure, our [**embroidery file formats guide**](https://sassydigitizing.com/embroidery/embroidery-file-formats-guide) explains each one.
2. **It was digitized by a person, not auto-converted.** Auto-converted files look fine on screen and fall apart on fabric. A real digitizer plans the underlay, pull compensation and stitch order.
3. **The size fits your hoop.** Scaling a 4x4 design up to 8x8 in your machine software does not give the same result, because density does not scale cleanly.

Our free Halloween files come from the same team that handles paid orders: bats, pumpkins, ghosts and other classics. Grab one, stitch a test on scrap fabric, and judge the quality yourself.

**Quick note:** we make **machine embroidery files**. We do not make hand embroidery patterns or cross-stitch charts. If you own an embroidery machine, you are in the right place.

### Which file format does your machine need?

| Machine | Format |
| ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Brother, Baby Lock | **PES** |
| Janome | **JEF** |
| Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff | **VP3** |
| Tajima and most commercial machines | **DST** |
| Ricoma, Melco, others | **DST or EMB** (tell us the model) |

## When Free Is Not Enough: Custom Halloween Embroidery

Free designs are the same files thousands of other people downloaded. If you sell on Etsy, your buyer has already seen that ghost in six other listings. Custom is how you stand out. These are the custom jobs people ask for most in October:

**🎃 Costume patches and name tags**

Superhero emblems, made-up badges, a kid's name in creepy lettering. "Halloween costumes" is a breakout search for good reason.

**👻 Your logo, Halloween edition**

A witch hat on your mascot, or a pumpkin in place of the "O." Small businesses do this for staff shirts every October. We can [**convert your logo to embroidery**](https://sassydigitizing.com/digitizing-services/convert-logo-to-embroidery) with a seasonal twist.

**🦇 Trick-or-treat bags**

Names on canvas bags. Easy to sell, good margin, and every parent wants one that is different from the neighbor's.

**🕷️ Team, school and party hoodies**

Office party, school carnival, bowling league. One design, twenty hoodies. You need a clean file that runs the same way twenty times.

**🐾 Pet bandanas**

Small hoop, quick stitch, big reaction. Skeleton dog, pumpkin cat. You get the idea.

Send a sketch, photo, screenshot or even a napkin drawing. We digitize it by hand, test it, and deliver it in the format your machine reads. Check the [**pricing page**](https://sassydigitizing.com/pricing) for rates before you order.

## Halloween Design Size Cheat Sheet

Sizing mistakes ruin more Halloween jobs than anything else. These are typical starting sizes. Your digitizer should adjust the file for the exact size you pick.

| Item | Typical design size | Best for |
| ---------------------- | ------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Left chest (polo, tee) | 3.5 to 4 in wide | Small bat, pumpkin, logo with hat |
| Hoodie front | 4 to 8 in wide | Ghost, skull, team name |
| Pet bandana corner | 3 to 4 in wide | Simple icons, short names |
| Trick-or-treat bag | 5 to 7 in wide | Name plus one icon |
| Jacket back | 10 to 12 in wide | Full scene, large lettering |

## Not Stitching? Halloween Vector Art for Print, Vinyl and DTF

Plenty of Halloween products are printed, not stitched: DTF transfers, screen prints, vinyl, sublimation mugs and laser engraving. They share one problem. A client sends a fuzzy JPG of a jack-o'-lantern, and your printer needs clean lines. A pixelated file stays pixelated no matter how you resize it.

We redraw it as true vector art:

- Clean paths that scale from a sticker to a banner
- Separated colors for screen printing
- Delivered as **AI, EPS, SVG or PDF**, ready for Cricut, Silhouette, RIP software or your print shop

Doing DTF or DTG? See our [**DTF and DTG vector art service**](https://sassydigitizing.com/vector-art-services/dtf-dtg-vector-art). Want the same Halloween logo stitched _and_ printed? We make both from one piece of artwork, so the results match.

## 5 Tips for Spooky Designs That Stitch Well

**1\. Keep small text big enough to read.**

A dripping "Boo!" font looks great at 3 inches and turns into a blob at half an inch. Keep lettering large or choose a simpler font. Our [**small letter digitizing**](https://sassydigitizing.com/digitizing-services/small-letter-digitizing) handles the cases where text has to stay small.

**2\. Avoid black on black.**

Halloween means black hoodies, and a black bat on black fleece disappears. Add an orange, purple or silver outline, or try glow-in-the-dark thread.

**3\. Use a topping on fleece and towel fabrics.**

Fleece swallows stitches. A water-soluble topping keeps them on the surface, and the design should be digitized with the right underlay for that fabric. Always tell your digitizer what you are stitching on.

**4\. Watch thin, pointy details.**

Bat wings, spider legs and witch hat tips can pucker or break thread when they are too thin. A good digitizer thickens them just enough to hold up without losing the shape. Seeing puckering on knit shirts? Read how to [**stop embroidery puckering on polos**](https://sassydigitizing.com/embroidery/stop-embroidery-puckering-polos).

**5\. Always test stitch.**

Use scrap fabric, the same stabilizer and the same thread as the real job. Five minutes of testing can save a ruined $40 jacket.

**⏰ Order this week, not next week.**

Design, test stitch, production and shipping all have to fit before October 31\. Tell us your deadline when you order and we will plan around it.

## Halloween Embroidery: Quick Answers

**Are your free Halloween embroidery designs really free?**

Yes. Download, stitch and enjoy. Check the license note on each file if you plan to sell what you make.

**Do you make hand embroidery or cross-stitch patterns?**

No. We make files for embroidery machines only.

**Which file format does my machine need?**

Brother and Baby Lock use PES, Janome uses JEF, Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff use VP3, and most commercial machines use DST. If your model is not listed, send it to us and we will confirm.

**Can I send a photo instead of a drawing?**

Yes. A photo, sketch, screenshot or logo file all work. If you can see it, we can work from it.

**Can you make vector art and embroidery from the same design?**

Yes. It is one of our favorite jobs: matching stitched and printed versions from one piece of artwork.

**Is it too late to order Halloween designs?**

Not yet, but time is tight. Order now, mention your deadline, and ask about rush turnaround.

Start free. Go custom when you are ready.

Grab a free Halloween file to test, or send us your idea and get a design nobody else has.
