**Quick answer:** A vector file is an image built from mathematical paths, points and curves instead of pixels, so it can be scaled to any size without losing quality. The most common vector file formats are AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS, SVG and PDF, plus CDR (CorelDRAW) and DXF. JPG, PNG and GIF are not vector files, they are raster images made of pixels. Printers, sign makers, embroidery digitizers, vinyl cutters and laser engravers ask for vector files because every shape and color stays sharp and editable.

## What Is a Vector File?

A vector file stores an image as instructions instead of pixels. Each shape is described by anchor points connected by straight lines or curves, plus a fill and outline color. A circle in a vector file is not thousands of colored dots, it is a center point, a radius and a color. When you make the file bigger, the software simply redraws the shapes from those instructions, so the edges stay perfectly sharp whether the logo is on a pen, a T-shirt or a billboard.

**Paths and anchor points**

Every shape is an outline made of points. Moving a point changes the shape, without any loss of quality.

**Resolution independent**

A vector has no DPI. It has no pixel size to run out of, so it prints sharp at any size.

**Fully editable**

Colors, shapes and text stay separate, so you can recolor a logo or move one element without redrawing it.

## What Is Vector Art?

Vector art is any artwork drawn as vector shapes: logos, icons, illustrations, lettering, patterns, line art and technical drawings. It usually has clean edges and flat or smooth colors. Photographs are the opposite. Their soft detail and millions of tones are better stored as pixels, which is why photos stay raster even inside a vector layout.

## Vector vs Raster Files

| | Vector File | Raster File | |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Made of | Paths, points and curves | A fixed grid of pixels |
| Enlarging | Stays sharp at any size | Blurs and pixelates past its size |
| Resolution (DPI) | Does not apply | Fixed, 300 DPI needed for print |
| Editing | Every shape and color editable | Pixel by pixel only |
| File size | Small, even at billboard size | Grows with size and detail |
| Best for | Logos, text, icons, print and cutting | Photos and detailed shading |
| Common formats | AI, EPS, SVG, PDF, CDR, DXF | JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP |

**Pro tip:** A vector can always be exported to a raster image at any size. A raster image can only become a vector by being traced or redrawn.

## Common Files That Are Not Vector

These formats are all raster. They can look sharp on screen, but they are made of pixels and cannot be enlarged without losing quality:

| Format | Is It Vector? | What It Is |
| ---------- | ------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| JPG / JPEG | No | Compressed raster image, no transparency |
| PNG | No | Raster image with transparent background support |
| GIF | No | Low color raster image, often animated |
| TIFF | No | High quality raster, used for photos and print |
| WEBP | No | Compressed raster image for websites |
| PSD | Mostly no | Photoshop file, can hold some vector shapes but is mainly pixels |

Most people find this out with a logo. See our guides on [whether a PNG is a vector file and how to convert it](https://sassydigitizing.com/blog/vector-art/convert-png-to-svg-for-vector) and [how to convert a JPG to vector](https://sassydigitizing.com/blog/vector-art/convert-jpg-to-vector).

## What Is a Vector File for a Logo?

A vector logo file is your logo saved as AI, EPS, SVG or PDF with real paths inside. It is the master version of your logo, and every other copy should be exported from it. When a printer, embroidery shop or sign maker asks for "a vector file" or "a vector version of your logo", this is what they mean.

- **AI or EPS** for printers, sign makers, promo products and embroidery digitizers
- **SVG** for your website and cutting machines
- **PDF** for anyone who cannot open AI files
- **PNG** exported from the vector for social media and documents

Our guide to the [best file format for printing logos, flyers and posters](https://sassydigitizing.com/blog/vector-art/custom-logo-flyer) covers the full logo file package and print settings.

## When You Need a Vector File

**Screen printing** **Required**

Each ink color needs its own clean shape for color separation and film output.

**Vinyl and Cricut cutting** **Required**

The blade follows the paths, so cutters need SVG or another vector.

**Laser cutting and engraving** **Required**

Cuts and score lines follow vector paths. Photos are the only raster exception.

**Signs, banners and vehicle wraps** **Strongly preferred**

Large sizes blur raster logos, while vectors stay sharp at any size.

**Embroidery digitizing** **Preferred**

A vector gives the digitizer exact shapes to build the stitch file from.

**DTF, DTG and websites** **Recommended**

They print or display a raster file, but a vector master lets you export a sharp one at any size.

## How to Tell if a File Is a Vector

The file extension is a clue, not proof. An AI, EPS, SVG or PDF can still contain a pasted photo. These checks tell you for sure:

**1** **The zoom test**

Open the file and zoom to 800% or more. A vector stays perfectly sharp. A raster shows pixels or blocky edges.

**2** **The selection test**

Click a letter or shape with the Direct Selection tool. A vector shows editable anchor points. A raster selects as one flat rectangle.

**3** **The outline test**

Switch to Outline view (Ctrl+Y in Illustrator). A vector shows clean shape outlines. An embedded image shows a box with an X through it.

## How to Open a Vector File

| File | Free Options | Paid Options |

| CDR | Limited free support | CorelDRAW |

## How to Get a Vector File of Your Logo

**1** **Ask whoever made it**

Your designer, printer, sign shop or embroidery shop may already have the original AI or EPS from a past job.

**2** **Search your files and email**

Look for .ai, .eps, .svg or .pdf files, or a "logo package" folder from when the logo was designed.

**3** **Convert what you have**

If you only have a JPG or PNG, it can be traced in software or redrawn by hand. Our guide on [how to vectorize an image in Illustrator](https://sassydigitizing.com/blog/vector-art/convert-png-to-vector-illustrator-guide) shows the DIY route.

**4** **Have it redrawn**

For a clean, production ready file, a vector artist redraws the logo by hand through a [logo vectorization service](https://sassydigitizing.com/vector-art-services/image-vectorization-service), usually within hours.

## Vector File Myths

| Myth | The Truth |
| ------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| "A high resolution PNG is a vector." | No. It is still pixels, just more of them. It will still blur when enlarged past its size. |
| "Saving as SVG or EPS makes it a vector." | Only if the shapes inside are paths. Saving a photo as EPS wraps pixels in a vector file. |
| "Every PDF is a vector." | PDFs can hold either. A scanned or pasted image PDF is raster. |
| "Vectors can only be one color." | Vectors can hold any number of colors and gradients. They just cannot store photographic detail well. |
| "I need Illustrator to use a vector file." | SVG opens in any browser, and Inkscape opens most vector files for free. |

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a vector file?

A vector file is an image made of mathematical paths, points and curves instead of pixels, so it can be scaled to any size without losing quality. Common vector formats are AI, EPS, SVG and PDF.

### What is vector art?

Vector art is artwork drawn as vector shapes, such as logos, icons, illustrations, lettering and line art. It has clean edges and stays sharp at any size.

### What are the most common vector file formats?

AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS, SVG and PDF are the most common. CDR (CorelDRAW) and DXF (CAD and laser software) are also vector formats.

### Is a PNG a vector file?

No. PNG is a raster format made of pixels. It has to be traced or redrawn to become a vector.

### Is a JPG a vector file?

No. JPG is a compressed raster image. It blurs when enlarged and must be traced into paths to become a vector.

### Is a PDF a vector file?

Sometimes. A PDF exported from Illustrator or CorelDRAW usually holds vector paths, while a scanned or pasted image PDF is raster. Zoom in to 800% to check.

### Is an SVG file a vector?

Yes, if it was drawn or traced as paths. An SVG can also wrap a pasted raster image, so check that the shapes are editable.

### What is a vector file for a logo?

It is the master version of your logo saved as AI, EPS, SVG or PDF with real paths inside. Printers, embroidery shops and sign makers ask for it because it scales cleanly.

### What is the difference between vector and raster?

Vector files are made of paths and scale to any size. Raster files are made of pixels and blur when enlarged. Logos and text belong in vector, photos in raster.

### How do I make a vector file?

Draw it in a vector editor like Illustrator, Inkscape or CorelDRAW, or trace an existing image into paths. For a clean logo, have it redrawn by a vector artist.

### Can I open a vector file without Illustrator?

Yes. SVG opens in any web browser, and Inkscape is free and opens SVG, PDF, EPS and many AI files.

### Why do printers ask for vector files?

Because vector logos and text print sharp at any size, every color can be set exactly and each shape can be separated for screen printing, cutting or embroidery.
